Drilling Fluids Engineer
About the Role:
We are looking for an experienced Drilling Fluids Engineer to join our onshore drilling operations team in Queensland, Australia. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the design, management, and optimization of drilling fluid systems to support safe, efficient, and cost-effective drilling operations. This position requires a technical, hands-on professional with strong knowledge of drilling fluid properties, fluid chemistry, and operational best practices.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Design & Engineering:
-
Develop and optimize drilling fluid programs based on wellbore conditions, client specifications, and project requirements.
-
Design fluid systems, including water-based, oil-based, and synthetic fluids, considering geological and operational factors.
-
-
Fluid Performance Monitoring:
-
Monitor and analyze the performance of drilling fluids during operations, adjusting properties to maintain optimal wellbore stability, lubrication, and cooling.
-
Manage fluid properties such as viscosity, density, pH, and filtration to ensure well control and hole cleaning.
-
-
Wellbore Stability & Pressure Control:
-
Collaborate with the drilling team to ensure wellbore stability, mitigate risks of wellbore collapse, and manage well control.
-
Use real-time data to adjust drilling fluid parameters as required for safe and efficient operations.
-
-
Troubleshooting & Issue Resolution:
-
Identify and troubleshoot drilling fluid issues, such as lost circulation, contamination, or high rheology, and implement corrective actions promptly.
-
Work closely with the drilling team to address any operational challenges related to fluid systems.
-
-
Quality Control & Reporting:
-
Ensure the quality and consistency of drilling fluids through routine lab testing and field evaluations.
-
Document fluid usage, performance data, and any adjustments made during operations.
-
Provide detailed daily reports on fluid performance, costs, and operational status to the client and project management.
-
-
Safety & Environmental Compliance:
-
Ensure adherence to safety, environmental, and regulatory standards, including proper handling and disposal of drilling fluids.
-
Maintain a strong focus on environmental protection through the selection of eco-friendly fluid systems and waste minimization practices.
-
-
Team Coordination & Training:
-
Collaborate with the drilling team, other engineers, and service contractors to ensure smooth operation.
-
Mentor junior engineers or field personnel and support training initiatives related to drilling fluids and operations.
-
Requirements:
-
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Geology, or a related field.
-
Minimum 3-5 years of experience in drilling fluids engineering, preferably with onshore experience in the oil and gas industry.
-
Strong knowledge of drilling fluid systems, chemistry, and operational parameters.
-
Experience with both water-based and oil-based mud systems, including their applications and troubleshooting.
-
Familiarity with drilling fluid additives, materials, and their impact on drilling performance.
-
Experience with lab testing and analysis of drilling fluids.
-
Certification Requirements:
-
IWCF (International Well Control Forum) certification or equivalent is preferred.
-
Valid driver’s license and the ability to work in remote locations on a FIFO (Fly-in-Fly-out) roster.
-
-
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and make real-time adjustments.
-
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact effectively with clients and team members.
-
