The world of oil and gas is a complex and multifaceted industry, filled with technical terms and acronyms that can be bewildering to the uninitiated. From upstream exploration to downstream refining, understanding the industry and oil and gas terminology is crucial for anyone involved in it.

A-Z of Oil and Gas Terminology

Abandonment: The process of changing a once active well (one that no longer produces oil or natural gas), to a state where it can be left indefinitely. All equipment that was used to produce oil and gas is removed and work is completed on the well to ensure that it will not cause harm to any surroundings.

Borehole: Hole in the earth made by a drilling rig.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): Process by which carbon dioxide emissions are captured and removed from the atmosphere. It is then stored, normally via injection into a secure underground geological formation.

Directional Drilling: Application of special tools and techniques to drill a wellbore at a predetermined angle.

Emissions: The release of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, into the atmosphere during oil and gas operations.

Fossil Fuels: A fuel source (such as oil, natural gas, or coal) formed in the earth from plant or animal remains.

Gusher: An oil well that comes in with such great pressure that oil flows out of the well head into the air.

Horizontal Drilling: Method of drilling where the drill bit is turned in a horizontal direction in an effort to produce hydrocarbons.

Injection Well: Used to place fluid underground into porous geologic formations.

Limestone: Calcium carbonate-rich sedimentary-rocks in which oil and gas reservoirs are often found.

Mud: Process of fluid circulated down the drill pipe and up the annulus during drilling to remove cuttings. It then cools and lubricate the bit, to maintain desired pressure in the well.

Oil Sands: Deposit of sand saturated with bitument.

Prorationing: Government allocation of demand along pools and wells; pipeline allocation of demand along shippers.

Roughneck: Crew member who works on the derrick floor, typically screwing together sections of drill pipe.

Storage Facility: A facility where oil and gas is stored in tanks or underground reservoirs before distribution.

Trap: Geologic feature which holds hydrocarbons or injected carbon dioxide, caused by the breaking of a rock plane.

Ultrasonic Meter: Ultrasound used to measure flow rates from outside the pipe.

Viscosity: The resistance to flow, or ‘thickness’ of a fluid.

Wellbore: The hole created by drilling a well, typically lined with steel casing to maintain integrity.

Start of Mega Batteries

The journey towards creating the world’s largest battery began as a response to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources like solar and wind. Whilst these sources offer green energy, they often generate power when it’s not needed. Energy storage systems, like batteries, provide a way to bridge this gap by storing excess energy when it’s abundant and delivering it when it’s needed the most.

In recent years, technological advancements have unlocked the potential to build mega batteries that can store and distribute massive amounts of electricity efficiently. The creation of these mega battery chemistry, grid modernisation, and the growing need for reliable renewable energy sources.

The World’s Largest Battery

In September 2016, a storm damaged critical infrastructure in South Australia causing a state-wide blackout. In response, Tesla installed the world’s largest lithium-ion battery, the 100MW Hornsdale Power Reserve – also known as “Tesla’s Big Battery”. It played a crucial role in stabilising the region’s power grid, providing fast response times to fluctuations in supply and demand.

However, Tesla’s record was soon surpassed by even more ambitious plans. In 2020, Vistra announced plans to build the Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility, set to be the world’s largest battery storage project. This project boasts a capacity of 400 MW / 1.6 GWh and it is expected to come online in phases. This has huge potential to revolutionise California’s energy landscape.

A New Era of Energy Storage Technology

The development of mega batteries has pushed the boundaries of energy storage technology. Whilst many of these systems rely on lithium-ion battery technology, on-going research and development are exploring alternative chemistries and storage mediums that could further improve efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.

Another emerging technology is the use of thermal energy storage, which stores energy in the form of heat. High-temperature thermal storage systems, such a molten salt tanks, can store energy for extended periods and release it as needed. This makes them suitable for grid applications and industrial processes.

The Economic Impact

The construction and operation of mega batteries has significant economic implications. These projects can create jobs, stimulate local economics, and attract investment into clean energy infrastructure. Furthermore, they reduce the overall cost of electricity by increasing grid efficiency and reducing the need for expensive peaker power plants and grid upgrades.

Our History

Previously known as Oil Consultants, with a specialism in oil and gas personnel recruitment, we’ve embraced the energy transition at this exciting time. Under our new name Visuna, we are now working across all energy and technology sectors.

For the past 20 years, we have been connecting the best people from our international talent pool to the best opportunities. Our passion for finding the right solutions for our clients remains at the core of what we do. Over the years, we have established relations in key geographical areas.

About Us

During 2022, we recognised a need to diversify both our client and market mix, which will secure our long term future and allow our business to expand. This diversification included a rebrand with a new name, new values, new internal systems, additional marketing activity and even the launch of a brand new website. We implemented an additional recruitment and business development team and expanded to new geographical locations to support this too. In this time, we opened an office in Texas and appointed a team there, who have grown our USA operations. We’ve also continued to grow business in our core locations, including Saudi Arabia and Australia.

In the last 12 months we’ve increased headcount and implemented a more streamlined operations structure to promote consistent and compliant operations. This included a hiring a Commercial Director to bring a stronger business development focus to the recruitment team. Alongside this, the introduction of new HR and Marketing roles ensure we have the right expertise for company growth plans. New roles were also created to aid development and promotion opportunities for existing team members. Plus, we supported a member of the team in their transition from working at the UK office to a new role at the Brisbane office.

After a continuous period of growth in 2022, we moved our UK head office to a more spacious location in Washington, Tyne and Wear to accommodate our team.

The onboarding process is often overlooked. A new employee needs to have a great experience being onboarded. Currently, 43% of millennials plan to leave their current job within 2 years, so an effective onboarding plan can help a business avoid joining this statistic.

What is Onboarding?

Onboarding refers to integrating a newly hired person seamlessly into a company. It is how an employee becomes familiar with the job role, daily tasks, and the overall environment of the business.

Subsequently, onboarding can be viewed as a crucial approach to ensuring employees feel motivated to navigate their new role. Indeed, this could even be seen as strategic to ensure high employee retention.

Different Onboarding Stages

Optimising the onboarding process is a key strategy to improve your brand image and recruit better candidates. For employers to complete the onboarding process successfully, it is key to follow the different onboarding stages.

1. Pre-Boarding

This stage begins as soon as the candidate accepts the job offer and continues until their first day in the position. This is the stage where the candidate will be uncertain about what lies ahead. Therefore, to help them get prepared, you could send them an employee handbook or video so they get a brief understanding of what their first day might look like.

2. Orientation

The second phase focuses on welcoming new hires into the company and providing an orientation to help them settle in. It is recommended to keep the first day as simple as possible. Share with them the company history, values, benefits. As well as this, introduce them to their direct team, and help them gain a better understanding of the organisation.

3. Training

Without conducting formal training, the candidate might feel lost. Furthermore, having a well-structured training plan will make the individual feel as if the company cares about their development. This means that they are more likely to engage.

4. Transition

This final stage is aimed to help employees transition from a new hire to an engaged employee. Organising a performance review is a good method to recognise their efforts so far, as well as providing advice to help their performance.

  • Firstly, if an onboarding is successful, employees are more likely to stay in their positions. As a result of this, the company should prevent future hiring costs.
  • Employees who are happier are more productive in their daily tasks. Subsequently, taking the time to nurture a healthy work environment will increase employee engagement.
  • Onboarding new employees introduces them to their co-workers early. This will naturally facilitate teamwork.
  • Finally, encouraging employees to become more involved in activities will result in greater investment in the company, it’s values, and the brand as a whole.

Global mobility refers to the function of an organisation that enables employees to move from one location to another. When companies have a global workforce, they can have employees who live in another country, frequently travel to different locations, or even have short-term and long-term contracts with other companies. If utilised correctly, global mobility can be a powerful and helpful tool for organisations to build their operations. Opportunities

Looking at candidates on an international basis can help a company expand its talent pool. Many benefits come from having an extensive talent pool. One of these is being able to expand operations into new countries. Plus, it ensures a company hires the right person for the project, without location being a barrier.
